Pros

  • Wonderful conversion—this remake definitely delivers all the original had to offer and more.
  • Improved story—cut scenes have been added, and little bits and pieces of plot draw the player in better than before.
  • Multiplayer—while the original needed modifications to allow for multiplayer, this version comes with it included.

Cons

  • Stealth—it simply isn't as important anymore, with uniform theft no longer an option at all.
  • Vehicles—while one is available, there are other opportunities where being able to pilot certain things would be exciting.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein is a remake of the classic first person paranormal shooter, Wolfenstein 3D. Players are sent to check out a secret Nazi project involving the occult, but they are captured and forced to shoot their way out of Castle Wolfenstein as waves of elite soldiers, some alive and some dead, try to end their escape. Along the way, players must shoot their way out of capture with any and all weapons they can find in the enemy stronghold. Occult horrors and ruthless elite soldiers await as the player attempts to stop the Nazis' horrible new creations.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein harkens back to the older first person inside shooters, where much if not all of the action happened on one plane. Using a traditional mouse and keyboard control scheme will delight fans of older FPS games, although they may not be aware they're playing a classic, thanks to the graphical facelift that Castle Wolfenstein has received. Much of the scenery will remind gamers of World War II, though the weaponry available will most certainly help that feeling. A variety of guns are available to conquer the Nazi threat, but accuracy and efficiency are valued over recklessness thanks to the context-specific damage system. Players can also use some of the experimental weapons the Nazis have created.
